2026 University Placements: A New Chapter Begins.

There are few moments more rewarding than seeing years of hard work come to fruition. After completing their KCSE examinations, our students have eagerly awaited their university placements, and we are delighted to celebrate this important milestone with them.

In 2025, 15 students under our sponsorship programme sat for their KCSE examinations after four years of dedication and commitment. We are proud to share that 11 of these students attained a C+ and above, qualifying for direct entry into university through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

This year’s placements have given us even more reason to celebrate. The KUCCPS placement process can sometimes be unpredictable, with students occasionally being placed in courses they did not apply for. We are therefore especially pleased that all 11 of our university-bound students were successfully placed in the courses they had applied for, allowing them to pursue the careers they have been working towards.

They are currently applying for short courses, and Kids League Kenya will continue to sponsor them throughout their training. We recognise that success takes many different paths, and we are committed to supporting every student in pursuing an education that aligns with their goals and aspirations.

As our university-bound students prepare to report to their respective institutions, we are also assisting them with their Higher Education Fund (HEF) and HELB applications to help ensure they have the financial support they need to begin their studies.

Your generosity has enabled these students to reach this important milestone, and your continued support will help them take the next steps towards fulfilling their dreams.

KLK Day 2025 – Finding the right path for you!

On 13th August 2025, we held KLK Day at Khadija Primary School, Hall. Students turned out in great numbers, accompanied by their proud parents. It was an honour to be joined by our trustees, teachers from partner primary schools in the Kongowea area, a representative from the Education Office, and the Chief of Kongowea, Madam Yasmin.

Our theme this year
This year’s theme, “Finding the Right Path for You”, guided discussions on career development, discipline, and responsibility.

One student, Joseph, put it perfectly: “KLK has helped me believe in myself and see a future I never thought possible.”

Stories That Moved Us
Our first speaker was Henry, now an alumnus of KLK. Henry shared his inspiring journey, reminding students of the importance of career guidance. Having benefited from the KLK scholarship, he emphasised working hard in STEM subjects, which often shape career opportunities. Henry graduated with a BSc in Biochemistry and is now employed at a company in Mombasa.

Next came Moniva, a student at Embu University, who painted a real picture of campus life: the challenges, the opportunities, and the resilience it takes to succeed. Her honesty struck a chord with those preparing to step into university later this year.

We also heard from Joyce, a confident Form Three student, who reminded us that success is not just about grades but also about integrity, respect, and responsibility.

Joseph Mulatya gave a heartfelt testimony of how KLK’s support in covering his school fees allowed him to excel and gain admission to university. He is now pursuing a Bachelor of Education (Science).

Performances That Spoke to the Heart


The stage wasn’t only for speeches. Students showcased their creativity with a short play, uplifting songs, and a moving poem of gratitude to KLK.

Guidance from Parents, Teachers, and Leaders


A parent representative, Mamake Feiswal, encouraged the students to make the most of the scholarship and to work hard to achieve their goals.

Madam Mwanakombo (a teacher at Kongowea Primary School) and Madam Lucy (a teacher at Khadija Primary School) encouraged students to take their education seriously, stressing its power to transform their future.

A Word from the Trustees

Our trustees shared their vision for expanding opportunities for students who may not have qualified for university. Vicki introduced new vocational training options in fields such as plumbing, electrical installation, carpentry, hospitality and catering, and hairdressing. These courses aim to equip young people with practical skills that can transform their lives and communities.

An further emphasised the importance of academic performance and reminded parents of their responsibility in supporting their children’s education.

Distinguished Guests

We were deeply honoured by the presence of Madam Khadija from the Education Office and our ever-supportive Chief of Kongowea, Madam Yasmin, who crowned the day with her encouragement and blessings.

Prize Giving

Hard work never goes unrewarded. Certificates were presented to secondary students who have excelled academically, shown outstanding discipline, and demonstrated commitment through volunteering at our 2nd ACT Shop.

A special highlight was the generosity of our alumni, who came together to contribute and purchase backpacks for the new students joining campus this year. Their support not only celebrated the achievements of our learners but also reminded us of the strong and caring KLK family that continues to give back.

Closing the Day

The day ended with a delicious pilau lunch, enjoyed by students, parents, and guests alike. Afterwards, everyone departed at their own leisure.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended, with special appreciation to the Education Officer and to Madam Chief for her unwavering dedication and support whenever we have needed her assistance.

Student Spotlight: Meet Kevin – From Dreams to a Future in Science and Service

Every scholarship tells a story. Behind the numbers and funding reports are real children with real dreams and real challenges. At Kids League Kenya, we’re proud to walk alongside students as they rise above difficult circumstances to create bright futures. Today, we shine a light on Kevin Amwoyi, whose inspiring journey is a true example of how perseverance and opportunity can change a life.

A Humble Beginning
Kevin completed his primary education at Kongowea Primary School in 2010, earning the title of top student in his class. But despite his excellent performance, joining high school was a challenge. Like many families in his community, Kevin’s parents couldn’t afford the cost of secondary education and his dreams hung in the balance.

A Turning Point
Thankfully, hope arrived in the form of his headmaster, who recognised Kevin’s potential and referred him to Kids League Kenya (formerly ACTS). Through our scholarship programme, Kevin joined Mazeras High School, where he continued to excel.

“Thanks to Kids League Kenya (former ACTS), I joined Mazeras High School and continued my academic journey. At Mazeras, I stayed focused and determined, finishing as the second-best student in my KCSE class of 2014 missing the top spot by just one point!”

This outstanding performance earned Kevin a place at the University of Nairobi, where he began a BSc. in Physical Sciences, later transferring to BSc. Biochemistry at the School of Health Sciences.

“With support from HELB and Kids League Kenya, I completed my studies and graduated in 2020 with a Second-Class Honours Upper Division in Biochemistry.”

Academic and Personal Growth
Kevin’s career began as a volunteer data collector. His hard work and dedication helped him secure an administrative internship at a local NGO focused on transforming lives. Today, he serves in a dual role as both Administrative Officer and Research Assistant at the same organisation.

“Looking back, I am deeply thankful for the support that made my education possible. Kids League Kenya played a key role in shaping my future. I hope my story inspires others to persevere, no matter what obstacles they face.”
Kevin’s journey is a story of talent and opportunity. From a top-performing primary student to a university graduate and now a changemaker in his community, Kevin shows us what’s possible when students are given the chance to succeed.

Exciting new partnership with Unity Homes

We’re thrilled to announce a new partnership with residential property developer Unity Homes.

Unity Homes is one of the fastest growing developers in East Africa with 687 homes completed to date and 2000 future homes in their plans. We are delighted they have chosen to make a corporate donation to Kids League Kenya.

In addition to their financial support, Kids League Kenya and Unity Homes will also be collaborating on a number of exciting future projects. We have a range of objectives including raising awareness of our fundraising work and the profile of our alumni.

A new partnership

Unity Homes are a Kenyan company, founded in 2014 and head quartered in Nairobi, so supporting a charity in Mombasa may not be immediately obvious connection. However, directors of Unity Homes are from Mombasa, and have known of the work of Kids League Kenya for a number of years:

One of the key differentiators of Kids League Kenya from many other charities is the local knowledge and how embedded we are in our community in Kongowea.

Our belief is that enduring change is possible when communities are able to take charge and find their own solutions for development. This is why our team work closely with the local schools and officials in our mission to enable bright students to access education, pursue a career of their choosing and give back to the community.

The mission statement of Unity Homes is: “To mass produce investment grade affordable housing with a focus on community to enhance lives and secure futures.” The alignment of having community at the heart of our work in both organisations means that there’s much we can achieve together.

A glance at their social media and you can see that ‘Unity is community’ is more than a slogan for the team at Unity Homes. As a residential developer the team at Unity Homes take seriously their responsibility to not just build the buildings for people to live in, they also encourage a sense of community in their developments.

Education changes lives

The commitment of Unity Homes to community ranges from the introduction of physical assets such as communal playground and swimming pool, to organised Easter egg hunts and Halloween fun days.

As well as activities for children, the team also prioritise education as an important part of developing a community.  Adult education opportunities include important skills such as computer classes to life saving first-aid skills.

Celebrating 25 years of educating students in Kongowea, Mombasa

Every year the Kids League Kenya community comes together to celebrate the achievements of our scholars.
Those who have graduated share their experiences in an effort to inspire those pursuing scholarships to keep working hard, concentrating, and pursuing their goals.

A special year

This year we celebrated Kids League Kenya Day with particular pride as we were commemorating 25 years of educating pupils in the Kongowea region.

The visitors arrived as planned and on time, with our guest of honor, an education officer, in attendance. Rebecca, who has been a supporter of ours for more than 20 years, also attended.

We planned for over 60 guests to join us, and guests were greeted with refreshments in readiness for a fun event.

In addition, there were outstanding student performances and speeches, and a special meal was provided at the end of the event.

Our graduates shared advice

An important element of Kids League Kenya day is always for our new and younger students to see what is possible. We ask our graduates to give their time and give back, offering advice to those coming next.

It was a very proud moment for the organization, realizing how much we have shaped these young people into devout women and men, who are professionals and intellectuals.

We had a series of speakers, from different professions and with varying topics to discuss. Our Master of Ceremonies was Lewa, a Kids League Kenya and University graduate himself.

Career advice

Our engineer Isaac (who was the recent focus of our Student Spotlight series) took time to emphasize to the young pupils the value of choosing a career. He encouraged them to be thinking about their personal qualities and skills, enabling them to find a vocation they will excel at and enjoy. This will help them to be content and not make mistakes in life, helping them to be successful.

Controlling Peer Pressure

Our target area, Kongowea, has several teenagers who occasionally end up hanging out with the wrong crowd and become less useful to society as a result.

When we get together each year, it’s important to encourage the students to stay away from risky behaviour that young people can engage in, including smoking marijuana, breaking into homes or even getting pregnant before they’re ready. Our university student Jennifer was able to interact with the kids giving them fantastic advice.

Hard work and Discipline

Success requires a lot of hard work and discipline. This was clear from the KSCE performance results from the previous year. We saw the greatest number of students move to universities.

Out of 30 pupils, 22 were able to achieve a C+ or higher, which is the average mark needed for admission to a university. Sammy was able to give his advice on what a student should do to achieve the greatest results. You may recognise Sammy – he was in our first Student Spotlight blog star of 2023.

Making this year particularly special

We call this Kids League Kenya day special because for the very first time, students received awards from the office. Julie our administrator took the lead on a lovely awards ceremony.

These awards were presented based on the following criteria: best performance, most disciplined, most voluntarism, punctuality in terms of providing documents to the office on time, among others.

The alumni also surprised two students who did incredibly well on their KCSE exams with gifts; one of them, Etole, managed to improve from a D+ to a B-. The education officer who was our guest of honor added Ksh. 1000 to the alumni contribution.

Celebrating 25 years of serving the Kongowea Community

On the KLK Day, we were also celebrating 25 years of educating students in the Kongowea region as a team.

The trustees were all present to spend time with the children and celebrate this important day with gorgeous photographs, lovely gifts, delectable meals, and many other amazing moments.

One of our trustees, Vicki, who has been there since 1998, shared a wonderful story of the organization’s progress to date.

New Celebration Library opens its doors

This week it’s National Library Week, and what better way to highlight this important educational resource than to announce the opening of a new library in Mombasa!

Back in November 2022 we announced some fantastic news that a group of our UK supporters had raised funds to create a library in Mombasa.

Kids League Kenya agreed to support the implementation of the library, using our local knowledge and the experience of our trustee Vicki to bring the ambition of this new community educational hub to life.

This library is based at Celebration secondary school, but beyond children, this centre also intends to launch adult education programmes.

Let’s take a look at the library

The money for this library was raised by the amazing Rotary Club South Derby and brought to life through fellow charity Start a Library and our efforts.

This library is much needed and will perform a great service to a number of different elements within the community. The venue is based at a secondary school, but also connects closely with 3 primary schools, extending its reach to many students in their formative years of learning.

The library will also launch its adult education programmes soon, with a particular focus on women’s education. This will be a safe space where women can further their education will be able to gather to develop their skills.

The theme of this year’s National Library Week is ‘There’s more to the story’ and we thought it would be meaningful to go a little deeper into the motivations of our partner for the Celebration Library project, Start a Library.

Student Spotlight: Meet Isaac and learn about his inspiring story

Isaac has benefited from the support of Kids League Kenya, and has achieved a great deal. He is leading a very successful life. This is due to his hard work and dedication. As a result of his focus, he has become what we hope for all of our students: a responsible and self-sufficient member of society.

From humble beginnings

Isaac’s parents always made sure that Isaac and his siblings had something to eat, but their situation was certainly was not one where they could cover all of the children’s school fees.

In Kenya secondary school is not free to attend, and is boarding school away from home. Parents from our focus community of Kongowea in Mombasa often have to make the difficult decision to end their children’s education after primary school due to lack of funds. Kids League Kenya also support student who look to progress into tertiary education – looking for support for university and college.

Isaac managed to get in touch with us in 2017. He met the criteria in our selection process and made a good impression in his interviews, so we decided to give him an opportunity. By working with our kind sponsors we were able to pay for his education expenses, enabling him to continue his education.

Potential from the very start

Throughout his time as a member of the Kids League Kenya student population Isaac consistently demonstrated reliability, adhering to the office regulations and was a very consistent student. He also showed great levels of obedience, one of many fantastic traits.

As his relationship with our organisation developed over the years, Isaac would visit the office to help Julie with certain office tasks, and even supported us for our Kids League Kenya inaugural sport tournament.

Excelling in tertiary education

Isaac was able to secure a chance to complete his bachelor’s degree course at the Technical University of Mombasa.

Kids League Kenya support students in their university and college ambitions, using a combination of sponsor funding and grants to cover tuition fees and also support their expenses. Isaac’s school costs were from 47,500 to 50,000 KSH a year for the four-year programme. To learn more about how we structure our support please visit our sponsorship details.

After completing his course, he graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Marine Engineering.

Since he joining Kids League Kenya, Isaac has held onto this as his ideal profession because he had high hopes that it will someday get him into a career. He made sure that he gave himself the best possible chance by maintaining outstanding grades during his time in school. He was able to graduate with a Second Class (upper division) degree.

A special graduation

Isaac’s graduation took place in August 2022, and was virtual due to COVID-19’s restrictions on gatherings.

Our Kids League Kenya team were able to plan his online graduation utilizing the computers in our internet corner. During the graduation, he was accompanied to the office by his mother and brother, who were both grateful to the trustees and the donors. They were delighted to be there and so proud of what Isaac had achieved. Alongside Julie from our team, two of our trustees, An and Jan, were able to join and celebrate a successful graduation.

Living the dream

Isaac is from Mombasa, and set out to study Marine Engineering at Mombasa University.

The port is a hub of industry in Mombasa and Isaac’s career choice means that he’s well placed to work in his home town.

Isaac is currently employed with Comarco in the Indian Ocean. This role and a successful company is well deserved, as he continues to work hard and develop himself.

His graduation opened a new door, he is now living the life of his dreams, and he is able to provide for his family’s needs as well.

School Spotlight: Learn more about our school partner Kengeleni Primary

Kengeleni Primary School is a key partner of Kids League Kenya. The school is one of the chosen few institutions that we work closely with to really maximise the opportunity offered to a child.

Our relationship with the schools continues based on the results and standards of the school.

We work with the educators to make sure that the children selected are those with the most potential and in need. They most often come from the poorest families in the area and there are challenges that come with their circumstances that mean the teacher, parent and school support is essential.

About Kengeleni Primary School, Kongowea

Kengeleni Primary School is based in the heart of the Kongowea community, in Mombasa, Kenya.

Kengeleni Primary is led by Headmaster Mr. Anderson. He has a staff of 21 teachers (as at October 2022), who cover the 11 subjects in the Kenyan Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

These subjects include activities across maths, local language Kiswahili, English language and literacy. Also religion, hygiene and nutrition, environmental activities, movement and creative activities.

Kengeleni has 1470 pupils

The team are educating 1470 students across a number of age groups (pupil numbers as at October 2022).

Pupils join their local Primary School when they can, and for some that is later than others. This is due to the range of personal circumstances (factors can include financial and family challenges that delay their attendance). This means that there is a range of age within the classes. After Primary School students graduate to Junior Secondary School (JSS).

After this point it is the end ‘free’ state education for students, this is when Kids League Kenya steps in to sponsor those in need, and with the academic potential. Find out more about the funding of education and the costs here.

In these classes of 100s of graduating students not everyone can be supported by our charity. We have to make the difficult decision of which pupils we can help. Find out more on how we select pupils.

1470 students in 0.3 acres

One of the most interesting and challenging aspects for the team at Kengeleni Primary is the location and physical size of the footprint.

Based on a 0.3 acre site between banana markets in the core of the Kongowea district, this is a constricted urban site.

It is a bustling hub of the community and the work they do to deliver such high standards and results is impressive.

Strive for excellence

The school has the motto ‘Strive for excellence’. Mr Anderson’s teaching staff uphold the highest standards of education, both in terms of adherence to policies and their enthusiasm for their pupils.

Alongside their motto, the mission of the school is clear. The partnership the school aims to have between the teachers, parents and pupils is core to their success.

The teachers at Kengeleni Primary are also part of our core team that make the Twinning events happen. These opportunities give students experiences beyond the classroom and their community, meeting students globally and learning about other cultures and lifestyles. We aim for them to build ambitions to change their lives.

The pupils are engaged, alert and busy in their signature purple uniform. A structure and routine is an important part of daily life for a children. This school helps many pupils to develop themselves and grow. This is at the core of what Kids League Kenya aims to do.

Experience Kongowea by tuktuk: thrilling guest tour of our community

When our UK based volunteer Vicky asked if we could show the work of Kids League Kenya to visitors she was bringing to Kenya, we were thrilled. In November we took the opportunity to put together a tour for these wageni (Kiswahili for visitors).

Authorised by the Kongowea Chief’s Office, our administrator Julie arranged all the details to create a trip to remember.

Meeting at the shop

Our visitors arrived at our meeting point, 2nd Act, our second hand shop in Nyali. This is also the headquarters of all things Kids League Kenya. Introductions were made to the team that would be joining the tour as guides, as well as to Abdeali, our accountant. They also had a chance to browse the items available to buy in our shop.

  1. Julie our administrator was in the lead tuktuk and in charge of the route and stops along the way.
  2. Lewa, who is a graduate of the Kids League Kenya programme and now in our office team was on hand for the second tuktuk and in charge of photography for the outing.
  3. In our third tuktuk was Yvonne, a former student from Kongowea Primary School and now studying Engineering at University, who was a kind volunteer for the day.

Experience Kongowea by tuktuk: thrilling guest tour of our community

Tuktuk Tour

Our plan for the trip was to drive past a number of our partner schools. We would stop at Kengeleni School where are guests could meet the headmaster, teachers and also see a few prepared performances from students in class.

Everything went to plan, though we did slightly overrun our schedule. This meant our guests were able to meet a lot more of the children as we left Kengleni Primary school. There were 1470 students out to lunch and able to wish us well!



It was a fantastic trip for all involved. School reunions, a chance to make new friends.

The people of our community in Kongowea waved and smiled, as the tuktuks snaked their way through the streets of the District. The children were fantastic, the teachers engaging and our guests were completely captivated by the sights and sounds of this unique experience.

Our visitors kindly donated funds covering all costs for the excursion. Many have subsequently become supporters of the charity. We really enjoyed the tuktuk experience, and thank all of our partner schools and the Chief of Kongowea for making this event possible.

Children love interactive African activities at Repton Literary Festival

We announced in 2019 that Kids League Kenya will be the international partner and recipient of support from the Repton Literary Festival.

The Festival like almost all social functions, did not have an event in 2020 due to Covid. The event has returned in 2021, with a special children’s festival theme.

KidsFest works to encourage literacy in young people.

Clearly with our own focus on education as a tool for children to be equipped to shape their own future, we are hugely aligned.

The Africa experience

The venue for KidsFest 2021 was the Repton Village Hall, in Derbyshire, UK. Our supporters, alongside our International Liaison Ann, were on hand to spread the word about Kids League Kenya.

Our team created an immersive experience for local children to engage with Africa. From interactive video displays, an art activity and even artifacts from Kenya to explore, it was a unique opportunity.

We believe that through education, experience and opportunity we can create a network of global ambassadors. It is important that children are given access to other cultures and ways of life.

This was a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of Kids League Kenya. We really welcome any activities to support us as we work to help our community in Kongowea to improve their futures through education.

Repton Primary School is one of our Twinning Event partners. This event was a great way to interact with the pupils and parents and explain more about the work of our organisation in a different setting. Thank you to the Repton Literary Festival.
