Where we work

We focus on Kongowea, a disadvantaged community in Mombasa, Kenya.

We work with selected local schools to develop gifted pupils so that after their free primary education is finished, through academic sponsorship we support taking them through secondary school and university (at educational institutions across Kenya).

A key step is identifying the talent at primary level, so they continue in education.

Once the child has left school (aged between 14 and 16 – people join primary at different ages due to their personal circumstances) and is working a job to support their family, it is difficult to help them to re-enter the educational framework.

Where is Kongowea?

Mombasa is a port town on the coast of Kenya, East Africa. Kids League Kenya has operated in Mombasa for over 20 years, and focusses on Kongowea, a disadvantaged community near Nyali.

We are able to make a considerable difference to the lives of the children and their families, using education as a key step in changing their futures.

Why Kongowea?

Kongowea is a densely populated district with over 25 villages and 30,000 households. It is home to one of Kenya’s largest open-air markets.

The living conditions are extreme, with a lack of sanitation, high crime rate and an absence of basic essential amenities like health facilities and tap water.

There are local schools, and we work with them to identify students to support in changing their lives.

Education in Kenya

In Kenya, the right to education is explicitly stated in Kenya Constitution 2010 where Article 53(b) guarantees the right to free and compulsory education for every child.

However, Kenya’s education sector continues to have challenges, such as lack of infrastructure, large number of students in a class and missing educational materials that hinder the attainment of quality education standards. This leads to gaps in learning outcomes, teacher management and performance levels.

It is against this background that Kids League Kenya focuses on offering scholarships to secondary and tertiary educational scholarships to talented students identified in their primary schools. We work with a select number of schools based in Kongowea.

Our partner schools

We choose local primary schools in Kongowea to collaborate with for selecting our students.

Kongowea Primary, Pentrose and Kengeleni are where most of our 24 new pupils selected are from each year.

We have also offered scholarships to talented students from Maweni Primary in recent years.

Though initially the schools are in Kongowea, once this stage of education is complete, pupils are able to access a number of schools to further their education.
