Learn more about our exciting Rotary Club partnership developments

In recent months our network of UK based supporters has extended our opportunities into the South Derby branch of the Rotary Club.

The Rotary Club network has the motto “Service Above Self”, and they connect people to solve problems. These challenges include humanitarian aid and community issues. There are over 1.2million members in the Rotary internationally.

About the Rotary Club

The Rotary Club in Derby South have been looking to Kenya and at ways to support education there. We’re delighted to share that they have chosen a project to fund.

Their first exploration to Kenya
The Rotary Derby South group have raised over £4000 towards funding a community library. Their intention is to work with our partner Start a Library. This project with include implementing a programme of work in Utange, Kenya.

This work includes raising awareness of education in the community, the physical library itself and training the staff and library monitors.

The library will be based at Celebration Secondary School, and act as a hub for a network of education institutions in the area.

Making a difference

The Celebration Library based at the Secondary School connects to three local primary schools who will all have access to the facility, which will be community owned.

There will also be an adult education programme introduced, with a particular focus on women’s education. It will also be a Covid catch up facility. The goal will be helping to continue the work to get students back on track with the curriculum after the pandemic caused such disruption to their educations.

Education is our passion

Though the school selected is not one of our partnerships in Kongowea, we of course welcome the investment into the Mombasa educational community.

Our volunteer trustee Vicki has agreed to support the implementation of the library in Mombasa, and we are starting to make progress now the funds have arrived.

Stay tuned for updates as the Celebration Library project comes together, and for more news of our work with the generous members of the Rotary Club South Derby.
